Environmental Initiative<//font>
Hampden Papers, Inc. takes great pride in a long tradition of integrity and values. Responsibility as an American business in the global market has taught us to minimize our impact on the environment while providing for our customers needs. Setting the standard of quality is not only limited to the products we produce, but also the way we produce them.
Our historic mission statement:
Our primary mission is to continue as a quality converter of paper, film, foil and related products.
We are committed to a unified effort, responsive to the needs of our customers, employees, stockholders, suppliers and community.
To our customers we are committed to provide timely service, innovation, consistent quality and competitively priced products.
To our employees we are committed to provide industry competitive wages and benefits, respect for the individual and continued improvement of facilities and working conditions.
To our community we recognize our responsibility to respect and protect our environment, pay our share of taxes, support local charities and encourage our employees to work for community betterment.<//font>
Through the years, our objectives have also included improving air quality, reduction of water consumption and waste, saving landfill space, conserving natural resources, reducing pollution and contributing to sustainable alternative energy sources.
Our Suppliers: <//font>
Striving to achieve a green supply chain, we are partnered with domestic suppliers who are either SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) or FSC (Forestry Stewardship Counsel) certified. They are consistently presenting environmentally innovative substrates that provide the quality and integrity our customers have come to expect.
Through our partnership with suppliers who employ sustainable forestry management practices, we have sought and found a bright white C1S SBS paperboard made up of 30% post consumer recycled components. We are pleased to be able to offer this environmentally responsible alternative to the marketplace considering that over 80% of our business consists of C1S SBS paperboard usage.
Our Products<//font>
Hampden Papers has developed a direct metallized product line called Zero Gauge. The direct metallization process introduces an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional foil and film lamination. Zero Gauge products are biodegradable, compostable, recyclable and repulpable, thus saving landfill space and minimizing the carbon footprint.
Awards & Recognition<//font>
Hampden Papers has been awarded the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Toxics Use Reduction numerous times. We are honored to have our diligent environmental commitment acknowledged by the Governor’s office.
Many customers have shown their appreciation for our outstanding service, value, quality and innovation. Having received countless awards, plaques and certificates, we are grateful for the recognition. We look forward to providing our customers with superior quality products, service and commitment for years to come.
Compliance to Regulations: <//font>
Our efforts have enabled us to custom manufacture products to meet specified criteria:
1. California Proposition 65 List of Carcinogens and Reproductive Toxicants 2. The European Union’s “Restrictions of Hazardous Substance Directive” (ROHS) and “Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive” (WEEE PentaBDE / OctaBDE ) 3. The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer 4. The Source Reduction Council of the Coalition of Northeastern Governors (CONEG) 5. U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Code of Federal Regulations – Title 21
Air Quality<//font>
Our values made us one of the first paper converters to switch to water-based coatings from solvents in the mid 1980's, long before strict environmental standards required it. We are proud to have reduced our annual volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions by 97%.
Water Use & Consumption<//font>
Over the past two decades, we have implemented responsible water management practices and have significantly reduced water usage and wastewater discharges. Hampden Papers uses less than half of the volume of water permitted to us by the City of Holyoke.
Electricity<//font>
Approximately 60% of the electricity Hampden Papers utilizes is obtained by hydropower, a renewable, waste free resource that does not contribute to greenhouse gasses. Our electricity is hydraulically generated at the Holyoke Dam. Because the dam slows the flow of the Connecticut River, our electricity supplier supports a fish lift at the dam. The fish lift facilitates many fish species, such as Atlantic salmon and American shad in their natural migration patterns.
Our electricity supplier is currently exploring their capacity to supply power harnessed from the wind. We are excited by the possibility that our future electrical energy may soon be derived from wind power: a clean, renewable, inexhaustible resource.
Solid Waste Recycling<//font>
Through a strong partnership with International Paper Products Corporation of Westfield, MA, over 90% of Hampden's waste from manufacturing is recycled, it goes on to be reprocessed into fuel cubes for heat and electricity production.
In order to become a “biomass fuel”, our waste is combined with other industrial trash and scrap such as fabric, wood and packaging materials, etc. The combined waste is then ground, dried and compressed into cubes for use as a sustainable, non-hazardous, manufactured fuel.
Community Responsibility<//font>
Our Employee Charitable Fund allows each employee to directly contribute to local charities administered by the Community Foundations of Western Massachusetts. In addition to funds, we donate materials and supplies to many regional schools and nonprofit organizations.
Looking Forward<//font>
Hampden Papers is committed to strengthening our sustainable business platform with green practices in order to provide our customers with a range of options to meet their own sustainability objectives.
As part of our dedication to shared concerns for a better future, we will continually seek alternative ways to decrease our environmental impact and contribute to the greater good. We encourage our employees, community, customers and suppliers to reduce waste, prevent pollution and be more environmentally conscious. Please participate in our evolving tradition of integrity and values by supporting long-term environmental concerns and seek out innovative green practices for future generations.
